Facilitated Conversations

Discuss the assumptions that have been made, reopen clear communication channels, and strengthen strained relationships with the assistance of an impartial person. It might involve the carers of your loved one, fellow residents in your retirement village, or members in a club. Facilitated Conversations uses restorative practice principles. The affected people are assisted to have a dialogue, make decisions about their needs and obligations so that their relationship can be restored and resentment overcome.

Elder Mediation - Navigating life’s transitions

Take part in a process which provides the time and space to explore the the important issues between you and others, assisted by a neutral person - a mediator. In Elder Mediation the older person’s wishes and concerns are at the centre of the conversation. The process is designed to support the older person’s participation. The discussion focuses on the older person’s strengths and uses supported decision making. Key topics often include health, home, finance, social network and caregivers.

Elder Mediation - Supporting legal processes

Mediation Mediation is an option for resolving formal complaints under the Retirement Village Code of Practice if the parties involved have been unable to resolve it between themselves. The complaint may be between the operator of a retirement village and a resident, or it might be between residents.  The mediator is independent and unbiased.

Helen Clarke is a certified Elder Mediator and member of two approved mediator agencies for this type of work - Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ) and Resolution Institute (RI).

Helen Clarke is not a lawyer. Mediators and lawyers can work collaboratively. Mediation can be used to support the decisions around Enduring Power of Attorney (EPOA) and compiling instructions for a Will. During or following the mediation, the agreements and understandings should be shared with your legal representatives. Legal advice is always recommended before finalising an EPOA and/or Will.
